A photo caught my eye yesterday when I was catching up on the news, of two masked revellers having a ball at the Lucerne Carnival. I was unaware that they had such a strong Carnival tradition in Switzerland, so I took to the Internet to do a bit of research. It turns out that Carnival, or Fasnacht as it is known locally, is a pretty big deal in Switzerland. Particularly in the towns of Basel and Lucerne. Continue reading

This year Mardi Gras falls on the 21st February. Originally observed as part of the Christian calendar, Mardi Gras (meaning literally “fat Tuesday”) marked the last day of feasting and celebration before the Lenten period of abstinence began on Ash Wednesday.
